The best spots for a couple photoshoot in Porto

Porto is one of those cities that photographs itself. Granite and blue tile, the river folding through it, and a light off the Atlantic that turns ordinary afternoons cinematic. After years of shooting couples here, these are the spots I come back to — and the times of day that make each one sing.

1. Ribeira & the old lanes

The postcard Porto: washing lines, tiled facades, staircases that go nowhere. Go early — before 9am the crowds are thin and the light slips low between the buildings. Perfect for walking, hand-in-hand frames.

2. Foz do Douro & the ocean

Where the river meets the sea. Rocks, spray, endless horizon — my favourite place for the last hour of light. Bring a jacket; the wind here writes half the photos.

The best frames in Porto happen when you stop posing and just let the city move you around.

3. Jardins do Palácio de Cristal

Green, quiet, and high above the river. Peacocks, hedges and hidden benches — a soft, romantic contrast to the stone of the centre. Beautiful in the flat light of an overcast day.

When to shoot

Golden hour is the easy answer, but Porto’s overcast days are secretly the best: the whole sky becomes one giant softbox. If you can, we’ll plan around the light, not the clock.
